Pillars of salt and pillars of sand

XO's Middle Eight | Aug 27, 2008 09:20PM

Coldplay has done the first video cover that I can remember. After admiring Depeche Mode's Enjoy The Silence (like we all do), the band decided to their own version set to their new song. Anton Corbijn directed both. What do you think? Coldplay Viva La Vida: Depeche Mode Enjoy The Silence:

Cutting Edge Music Fest 2008 Review Part 2

Allan's World Music | Aug 27, 2008 07:43PM

Now time for the conclusion to my in depth look at Cutting Edge Music Fest 2008. I left off talking about the single most entertaining event hosted by any music group in the history of my experiences at music festivals. The Johnstones were going to talk to us about anything and everything to do with sex; not to be confused with their newest album by the same name which I shall be reviewing in the weeks to come. I volunteered [...]

New TV On The Radio - Dancing Choose

PrettyMuchAmazing! | Aug 27, 2008 07:43PM

I abso-fucking-lutely loved the first sweet taste of TV ON The Radio’s next brilliant opus Dear Science, –the title itself alludes to a punny album, no?– wel, Dear Science taste number two isn’t as sweet as “Golden Age,” but is far from bitter. Very far. “Dancing Choose” is a hectic, urgent mess of greatness. I have a contest in mind. $50 iTunes gift card to the person who sends me a video of them singing along to this song, singing [...]

gorilla vs. bear | Aug 27, 2008 07:40PM

First Aid Kit (recently signed to the Knife's Rabid Records) cover Fleet Foxes' "Tiger Mountain Peasant Song" in a Swedish forest. At the risk of being banished from Blogville, I think I like this better than the original. I like my pastoral folk to be mad pastoral:(via)********************************************

gorilla vs. bear | Aug 27, 2008 07:20PM

P4k.tv had themselves a good week. First that 3-parter thing with Beach House in a basement, and now the premiere of this perfectly appropriate new video for the Walkmen's best single since "The Rat," with Hamilton Leithauser starring as the "I Like Turtles" kid in director Norman Coady's awesome old-timey horror flick:mp3:the walkmen :: in the new year*******************************************

Blogger arrested, accused of posting 9 unreleased Guns N' Roses songs

brooklynvegan | Aug 27, 2008 06:20PM

A man accused of posting nine previously unreleased songs by the rock band Guns N' Roses on a website where they could be accessed by the public was arrested at his home early today on suspicion of violating federal copyright laws, authorities said. Kevin Cogill, 27, is accused of posting the songs, which were being prepared for commercial release, on the Internet blog Antiquiet in June, according to an arrest affidavit. The site received so much traffic after the songs were [...]

New Fall Out Boy - Welcome To The New Administration

PrettyMuchAmazing! | Aug 27, 2008 05:42PM

When some anonymous tipster emailed the .zip file for Fall Out Boy’s new mixtape, Welcome To The New Administration, I almost didn’t want to open it. No, I’m lying I opened it in a second. This new mixtape acts as a progenitor to Fall Out Boy’s fourth album Folie A Deux (another 2008 release I’m really excited for — and I’m not ashamed to admit it!), which is set to hit shelves Election Day 2008 (November 4th, for you non-voters). [...]

MOG - Most Discussed | Aug 27, 2008 05:40PM

Chase the albino cricket had a plan.  He knew he had to get to Indio for the Cricketchella fest.  You see, Chase loved live music & Cricketchella was the place to be for music.  Plus, all his friends & cousins would be there.  Ella Anne, Izzie, Debbie, Lucas, Amber & Craig to name but a few.    But HOW ???  He lived in Pennsylvania & Indio was all the way across the country.    He went to his mother and asked [...]

Little Boots

Big Stereo | Aug 27, 2008 05:20PM

Some exciting Little Boots news!! She’ll be releasing her first American EP called Arecibo on IAMSOUND in November! To hype it up Ms Boots dropped a new mixtape on the Internet: Little Boots - “Computer Fairyland Mixtape” Little Boots also put up a cover of Alphabeat’s “Boyfriend” on her popular YouTube channel (make sure you subscribe). That’s her little bro on the drums. For real. Like the Partridge family or something. There wasn’t a tracklisting included with “Computer Fairyland” so [...]

brooklynvegan | Aug 27, 2008 05:20PM

by CD Sad news - Steve Foley, who played drums with the Replacements and with Tommy Stinson's post-Replacements project Bash & Pop, has passed away at the age of 49. According to reports in the Star Tribune of Minneapolis-St. Paul, Foley died this past weekend in Minneapolis of an accidental overdose of prescription medication. ATP NY Full Schedule Revealed

stereogum | Aug 27, 2008 04:40PM

When I posted that MBV live clip earlier today, I closed by mentioning the upcoming ATP NY weekend. We knew mostly who to expect at the Kutshers Country Club in Monticello, NY, but now we've got a look at the full schedule and complete timetable. Yes, now you know exactly when you'll see Om transition into Low, Tortoise abuts Thurston Moore abuts Built To Spill, and My Bloody Valentine blow minds.

New Jay-Z - Jockin’ Jay-Z (Teen Wolf Remix)

PrettyMuchAmazing! | Aug 27, 2008 04:22PM

Here’s another ‘Jockin’ Jay-Z’ remix. This Teen Wolf remix inspires a bit of hard hipster dancing, quite a change from the old school homage we received with Rob Low’s remix. Frankly, this isn’t as good and the beat sounds do get annoying and you get this odd relief after the four minutes are up. Second and third times through do sound better this. This is a grower.

Singled Out no.3 - Ozomatli - 'Cut Chemist Suite'

Certified Banger | Aug 27, 2008 04:22PM

Imagine the delight when a 15 year old Jurassic 5 fan heard Chali 2na rapping over delicious latin beats. Imagine the surprise when, 9 years later the same J5 fan looks it up on Amazon and sees people attempting to sell a CD single for silly money.Well, thankfully that 15 year old bought the CD the moment it came out and now doesn't have to cough up a tenner or more to hold it in his hands. And this is, [...]

No Offense

as restless as we are | Aug 27, 2008 03:42PM

A reader told me awhile back that ARAWA was banned in China. It's probably better that way, since this song (like the audio equivalent to Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany's) would no doubt offend the crap out of any Chinese person who came across it.Lou and the Hollywood Bananas was one of Lou Deprijck's (Two Man Sound, Plastic Bertrand, Victor Lazlo) many projects. Check out his crazy Discogs page here (the bit about Serge Gainsbourg is classic).Lou & the Hollywood [...]

Pitchfork.tv: The Walkmen: "In the New Year" [Video Premiere]

Pitchfork:Today | Aug 27, 2008 03:40PM

When I first heard "In the New Year", from the Walkmen's Best New Music-honored You & Me, what gripped me was the romance-- anguished, artfully dramatized romance, but still. The Norman Coady-directedvideo for this craggy, string-haunted song is more of an old-fashioned horror show. Nosferatu creepiness goes on in the background, complementing the old-fashioned quality in the song's same-room production. The grainy, black-and-white past ("how it started"?) is overlaid with black-and-white footage that looks more like the present ("how it ends"?), [...]

Tropic Thunder Review and Playlist

Allan's World Music | Aug 27, 2008 03:23PM

Tropic Thunder came out on August 15th and while it’s been almost 2 weeks since the release date. I got to see it this past Monday. I must admit the commercial and subsequent promo videos released by the trio of Downey, Stiller and Black really made this movie look VERY stupid. It got rave reviews but otherwise a lot of people weren’t too excited to see it. I went to see it as my friend leaves town for university (boo school [...]

Feeling the Fabric: Hyping The Drum & Bass [Feeling The Fabric]

Idolator | Aug 27, 2008 03:21PM

DJ-mix series come and go, but the paired Fabric and FabricLive mixes have so far issued 80 CDs. To see how they stack up as a whole, we're reviewing them in numerical order, and very loosely: in some cases I will only have played the mixes only two or three times. FabricLive 03: DJ Hype (April 2002) Hated most of this the first time through: drum and bass at its deepest moment of impasse, to my ears, and impossible to care [...]

Pitchfork.tv: Beach House: "Apple Orchard" (Live from Juan's Basement)

Pitchfork:Today | Aug 27, 2008 03:20PM

Part 3 of Beach House's live set from Juan's Basement is up today (in case you missed them, Part 1 and Part 2), and it finds the Baltimore dream-poppers revising a song from their haunting self-titled debut. In addition to a lovely "Apple Orchard", there's also an interview in which Victoria Legrand explains why she keeps her restaurant job even as they pile up tens of millions of dollars with their music (pretty sure she's joking about the second part). Pitchfork.tv [...]

Juliana Hatfield Brings "This Lonely Love" To Leno

stereogum | Aug 27, 2008 03:20PM

The official "This Lonely Love" video found Juliana Hatfield walking around Cambridge with her old-school Discman, an iPod, a boombox, etc. Richard Butler shares vocals on the studio version, but fittingly, Juliana hiked solo in the clip. She performed the track on Leno this past Monday and wore a dress that shows up somewhere in that clip/the How To Walk Away album cover, only this time she didn't move around as much and had a band backing her.

Premature Evaluation: of Montreal - Skeletal Lamping

stereogum | Aug 27, 2008 03:20PM

Skeletal Lamping is anything but skeletal. When we took a close listen to album closer "Id Engager" we mentioned it wasn't the strangest, most ambitious, or best tune on of Montreal's new one, but after absorbing the other 14 tracks, it's clearly the ideal closer. Skeletal opens with the schizo epic "Nonpareil of Favor" and never lets up shifting, which is why you want a more straight-ahead disco track -- Kevin Barnes as Scissor Sister -- to close, bringing everything back, [...]
